Is Oil Mist Emission and Filter Bursting a Quality Issue?

With oil-sealed vacuum pumps being widely used across various industries today, users are paying increasing attention to oil mist filtration - both to comply with national environmental regulations and to protect workers' health. In this context, selecting a high-quality oil mist separator becomes particularly important, as inferior products can lead to incomplete oil mist separation and the reappearance of oil mist at the vacuum pump's exhaust port. But does the reappearance of oil mist at the exhaust port necessarily indicate a quality problem with the oil mist separator?

We once had a customer consult about issues with their oil mist separator. The customer claimed that the previously purchased oil mist separator was of poor quality, as oil mist still appeared at the exhaust port after installation. Furthermore, upon examining the used oil mist filter element, the customer discovered that the filtration layer had burst. While this initially sounded like a case of using a low-quality filter element, after understanding the customer's vacuum pump specifications and relevant filter data, we concluded that it might not be a quality issue, but rather that the purchased oil mist filter was "undersized."

By "undersized," we mean mismatched. The customer was using a vacuum pump with a capacity of 70 liters per second, while the purchased oil mist separator was rated for only 30 liters per second. This mismatch caused excessive exhaust pressure to build up when the vacuum pump was started. For filter elements without pressure relief valves, the filtration layer would burst due to excessive pressure, while those with relief valves would see them forced open. In both scenarios, oil mist would escape through the vacuum pump's exhaust port - exactly what this customer experienced.

Therefore, for effective oil mist filtration in oil-sealed vacuum pumps, it's not only crucial to choose a high-quality oil mist separator but also to select the correct model that matches your pump's specifications. Proper sizing ensures optimal performance and prevents premature failure, ultimately protecting both your equipment and the environment.
