Vacuum Pump Noise Suddenly Increases, What’s Going on?

Vacuum pumps generate noise during operation, which typically originates from two primary sources: mechanical components (such as rotating parts and bearings) and airflow during exhaust. The former is typically reduced with a soundproof enclosure, while the latter is addressed with a silencer. However, we encountered a unique case where neither a soundproof enclosure nor a silencer could solve the problem. What happened?

A customer reported that their sliding valve pump was operating at approximately 70 decibels—a level significantly higher than normal for this type of pump. They had initially sought to address the issue by purchasing a silencer, assuming the noise was exhaust-related. However, our tests confirmed that the noise was entirely mechanical in origin. Given the sudden onset of the increased noise, we suspected internal damage and recommended an immediate inspection.

The inspection revealed severely damaged bearings within the pump. While replacing the bearings resolved the immediate noise issue, further discussion with the customer uncovered the root cause: the absence of an inlet filter. The pump was operating in an environment with airborne impurities, which were being drawn into the system and causing accelerated wear on internal components. This not only led to bearing failure but also posed a risk to other critical parts of the pump. Ultimately, the customer trusted us enough to recommend a suitable inlet filter.

This case highlights the importance of a holistic approach to vacuum pump maintenance:

  1. Proactive Monitoring: Unusual noise, sudden sound level increases, or abnormal temperatures often indicate internal issues.
  2. Comprehensive Protection: Inlet filters are essential for preventing contaminants from entering the pump and causing damage.
  3. Tailored Solutions: Selecting the right filter based on the operating environment is critical for effective protection.

Regular maintenance and proper filtration not only extend the pump’s lifespan but also minimize unplanned downtime and repair costs. If your vacuum pump exhibits any abnormal behavior, prompt inspection and addressing root causes—not just symptoms—are key to sustaining optimal performance.
